Mac Thornton on What's Stinking up the Potomac

Interceptor manhole near Sycamore IslandMac Thornton, the Chairman of Potomac Riverkeeper, recently spoke out to Fox 5 News regarding the foul smell that had been plaguing a section of the Potomac for years.

"I started jogging when I moved to Cabin John and every quarter mile on my runs I would notice this oder," says Thornton.

For years, the smell remained a mystery. After discovering that the source of the smell was venting from the Potomac Interceptor sewer line, a coalition of concerned citizens decided to take action and voice their concerns with DC Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water). Today DC Water is working to retrofit these old sewer vents in oder to eliminate the smell of polution.
