PURE POTOMAC ROUNDUP: Giving thanks for community action, more “friends” and plenty of chances to get involved!

Friday, November 4, 2011 - 1:41pm

Thanks to all of you who participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Individuals like you and our partners at CVS Pharmacy, Food and Water Watch, REI and Mom’s Organics  helped get the word out and made your river and your drinking water healthier in the process.  From blogs, to reminder cards, to e-blasts...it was truly a community-wide effort.  Together we helped keep over 188 tons of unused medicines out of rivers and streams across the United States!

We are also grateful to our friends at Calleva who offered a discount to PRK members at their legendary Markoff Haunted Forest. We promoted Take Back day at their legendary Halloween event to thousands and they helped us keep the "scary" in this campaign!

Don't flush drugs down toilet! Learn more here about the next Take Back Day and how to safely dispose of unused drugs throughout the year.

Congratulations to Connie Chang, who won a PRK T-Shirt and hat for her participation in Drug Take Back Day. She not only signed up on our website and participated in the event but was featured on NPR, helping get the word out to thousands of more people. Thanks Connie!

More thanks to those who participated in our Facebook “Like” campaign and the Give to the Max event.  Our social media and development expert Sarah Sorenson gives you a full report here!

So what can you do to protect your river this month?

REI ATTIC SALE, FAIRFAX, VA: If you are a member at REI (and you SHOULD be...it's easy!) mark your calendars for Saturday, December 3rd, when REI Fairfax holds their coveted Attic Sale! This is a once-a-year event with outstanding deals for members-only and is known to have lines as early as 3am. Talk to their friendly and knowledgable staff and pick up some high-quality and great-priced gear to keep you out on the trails and water this winter. Then stop by our table to say hi! Our team will be there to celebrate the season, answer your river questions and show you how you can get involved with Potomac Riverkeeper in 2012!

ACTIVITY CALENDAR: Be sure to check out our Activity Calendar to learn about local river talks and clean-up events in and around the DC area this month and make sure that you are signed up for our Monthly E-news (by submitting your email at the bottom of this page) to learn about the on-going work of our Riverkeepers.

Make it a great November and remember...a Pure Potomac starts with you!
